Our History & Timeline

Katahdin Valley Health Center Timeline: 1974-Current

1974-1975

Katahdin Valley Health Center incorporated, opens first Medical Health Center in Patten with three exam rooms, two physician assistants, and a registered nurse. Known as “The Clinic” locally.

 

1976

KVHC Licensed by Department of Health and Welfare as an extension of outpatient services for Houlton Regional Hospital.

 

1979

Land and former Odd Fellows building purchased in Patten to build new, larger health center.

KVHC becomes a Medicare Certified Rural Health Clinic.

 

1980

Patten residents vote 5 to 1 to support plans for new clinic.

 

1981

New Patten clinic opens at 30 Houlton St., with three exam rooms, laboratory, X-ray facilities, waiting room, and office space.

 

1984

KVHC recruits first Dentist with NHSC

Dental care and optometry services offered to patients in Patten for the first time.

 

1986

KVHC becomes a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), funded by US Department of Health and Human Services Administration (HRSA) as a sub-recipient to Rural Health Centers of Maine.

 

1987

Significant addition built onto KVHC’s facility in Patten.

 

1989

Dental practice donated to dentist to form private practice in Patten, ME.

 

1995

KVHC Vision developed, and Board of Directors recruited first full-time Executive Director.

 

1996

KVHC Mission Statement developed and implemented.

Mental health, substance abuse, and podiatry services added to KVHC services.

 

1997

KVHC in collaboration with the Houlton Regional Hospital conducted ground breaking for second KVHC clinic.

 

1998

KVHC opens new medical clinic in Island Falls.

KVHC became a Medicare Rural Health Care Clinic and opens a second practice site in Island Falls.

 

1999

Board of Directors develop KVHC’s first long-range strategic plan.

KVHC joins Maine Ambulatory Care Coalition, now known as Maine Primary Care Association.

 

2000

New Executive Director hired.

KVHC applies for and receives $140,000.00 grant as an Independent 330 Grantee Status –as a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC).

KVHC partners with Mountain Heights Nursing Home.

KVHC leaves Rural Health Centers of Maine as a – 330 sub recipient grantee.

 

2001

KVHC has first Primary Care Effectiveness Review (PCER) by US Bureau of Primary Health Care, Region One.

Purchased Island Falls clinic from Houlton Regional Hospital

 

2002

KVHC enters HRSA’s Diabetes Health Disparities Collaborative and is recognized as Best Practice by Bureau of Primary Health Care

First OB/GYN physician hired.

 

2003

KVHC enters HRSA’s Depression Health Disparities Collaborative

KVHC has second successful Primary Care Effectiveness Review.

Major employer closes mills in East Millinocket and Millinocket, and KVHC applies for new Access Point grant.

 

2004

KVHC is awarded $612,667 for a New Access Point grant to serve Millinocket and the surrounding towns.

New Megawest Management Information System implemented.

KVHC receives Medically Underserved Area (MUA) and Medically Underserved Populations (MUP) designations for Millinocket clinic.

Purchased Bagley property at 9 Gardiner Street, Patten, for additional clinic parking.

Through collaboration with Fish River Rural Health Center and Aroostook Mental Health Center, KVHC is a sub-recipient grantee of a BPHC Expanded Mental Health grant;

 

2005

KVHC purchased property at 529 South Patten Road (Rt. 11).

Millinocket Medical and Dental clinics open.

Electronic Medical Records and companion Practice Management Systems implemented at all KVHC Clinics.

KVHC is approved a change in its Scope of Project allowing the Center to develop clinical services in Houlton, 40 miles north-east of Patten

Houlton Medical Clinic opens.

KVHC is awarded a Scope of Project approval and partners with Madigan Estates Nursing Home and Gardiner Health Care Facility.

KVHC is awarded $196,413 for Health Care and Other Facilities to purchase new medical, dental and office equipment to update and enhance the Patten healthcare facility.

 

2006

KVHC receives a change in its Scope of Project allowing the Center to develop Optometry services in Houlton for all patients within the entire service area.

Optometry, Podiatry, and Pediatric services first offered at KVHC Houlton clinic.

KVHC purchased Goode property at 26 Houlton St., Patten for future Patten clinic expansion.

 

2007

New vitals monitoring equipment installed at all KVHC clinics.

Behavioral Health services offered in Patten, Houlton, Island Falls, and Millinocket.

KVHC is awarded a Scope of Project approval allowing KVHC to collaborate with the Hodgdon School Department (MSAD 70) to provide essential services needed by the students, employees and families

KVHC is awarded a Scope of Project approval for an additional site location in Houlton. KVHC assumes the Company Doc Medical Practice and begins providing Occupational Medicine services.

 

2008

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) perform a Performance Review (OPR)

Planned Millinocket Dental and Medical Clinic expansions

 

2009

Patten clinic expansion planned, groundwork begins for a 1.8 million dollar project.

KVHC is awarded HRSA Expanded Medical Capacity funding $525,000 to increase access to healthcare in all KVHC clinics

KVHC is awarded $499,515 for American Recovery and Re-investment Act – Capital Improvement Program funding to update clinic equipment.

KVHC is awarded $178,639 for American Recovery and Re-investment Act – to increase Services to all health centers.

KVHC implemented pilot Open Access (walk-in care) program in Houlton.

2010

KVHC, as lead agency for the Katahdin Valley Network, receives a HRSA Rural Health Network Planning grant for $85,000.

KVHC is awarded Affordable Care Act – Capital Development Grant in the amount of $2,934,399 for infrastructure funding for Millinocket and Houlton clinics.

Patten clinic expansion completed

2011

KVHC is awarded American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds to increase services to all health centers.

KVHC is awarded funding in support of the Beacon Communities Program for $100,000

KVHC is awarded HRSA Patient Centered Medical Home Development Funding for$35,000

Millinocket Medical and Dental clinic expansion completed, all services combine into one building at 50 Summer St.

Houlton Clinic expansion at 59 Bangor St. is complete; all services now under one roof.

KVHC Mission and Vision Statements revised

KVHC purchased adjoining property in Millinocket to expand parking.

 

2012

KVHC joins Maine Medical Association

KVHC is awarded HRSA Patient Centered Medical Home Funding for $55,000

First annual Casey White Memorial Scholarship awarded.

Houlton Occupational Medicine Clinic renamed the “Casey White Occupational Medicine Center.”
